Ronny Chieng

Ronny Xin Yichieng, born on 21 November, 1985 in Malaysia, is an actor and comedian. Chieng is currently a Senior correspondent on The Daily Show, Comedy Central. He is also the creator and actor of the sitcom Ronny Chieng International Student. It premiered on ABC Australia as well as Comedy Central Asia in 2017. Chieng was born in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, to an Malaysian Chinese family. Chieng was raised in Singapore and the United States, living in Manchester, New Hampshire from 1989 to 1994. Chieng was a performer with Trevor Noah in 2013 at the Comedy Festival in Melbourne, Australia. Chieng was then invited to audition for the role as a correspondent for Noah's Daily Show two years later. Chieng was named one of the top 10 comics to watch by Variety in July 2016. In October of 2016, Chieng appeared as a guest on The Daily Show to respond to an interview with Jesse Watts on a Fox News segment that many considered racist. Chieng made expletive-laden comments about the segment from Fox News, the conservative network. He also returned to New York City's Chinatown. Watters had mocked the residents there and conducted respectful interviews in Mandarin Chinese and Cantonese. The video was viewed by millions and received coverage in the Washington Post and Slate. Chieng has not been able to acquire citizenship or permanent residency in Australia despite having lived in Australia for ten years. In the year 2018, Chieng admitted that he was an apologist during the Daily Show, but later clarified in an interview that he was "100 percent not afraid of dogs".
